“That was really engaging – the best PD session we have had all year!”

Naomi Mori-Hanazono – Assistant Principal – Huntingdale Primary School

“For the first time, I understood how challenging learning can be for some of my students – and how easy it can be to help them.”

Sharon Jones – Primary Teacher – Waverley Christian College

Visual Processing Disorder impacts 15-20% of the population, yet little is understood by educators about it.

The major impacts of Visual Processing Disorder are mental fatigue, adverse life-long learning outcomes – with the associated negative impacts on self-esteem, and perceived career direction barriers.

In comparison, better advertised challenges such as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD are apparent in only 1% and 5-11% of the population respectively, so with many PD hours already directed towards Autism and ADHD, this makes Visual Processing Disorder a massive blind spot for educators. In today’s litigious society, this could potentially represent a sleeping time-bomb.

With that in mind, Dyslexia Centre is offering schools Professional Development Sessions aimed at addressing the following:

  • What is Visual Processing Disorder?
  • Typical symptoms/indicators;
  • Treatment paths; and
  • Simple classroom adjustments that educators can make.

In our experience, a session usually takes approx. an hour in total with 30-40 mins devoted to the presentation followed by questions. The presentation is often a “light-bulb” event that brings together strands of teacher/student experience into clear focus for the first time, and as a result, teachers often have many questions.

It’s time for educators to get in front of this widespread challenge to student learning. Please call us on 8812 7616 to book your Visual Processing Disorder PD session now, or go to our contacts page and leave us a message.
